(Source: UPI) - Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine report that cardiovascular disease patients have an increased risk of dementia - including Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia - caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain.
"This is the first time that a group of older persons whose vascular disease was well characterized has been followed for indications of dementia, to see how much impact vascular disease has on the risk of developing dementia," explained Dr. Anne Newman. "What surprised us was that the trends not only for vascular dementia, but also for total dementia and Alzheimer's disease were increased in the same direction."
